Basics to Stress Free Prom Dress Shopping

May 3rd, 2013

Although prom dress shopping is fun and exciting, it can also be stressful. We have the best ways to cut the stress and make your experience quick and easy.

  • Online Research: Be prepared! You can minimize your store time if you shop online ahead of time. If you find a certain style you love online, buy it there or print it out and bring it to the store. It’ll be much easier to have an assistant help you when you have a reference than if you try to describe it from memory. This will lessen your time at each store and help you find your dream dress in no time.
  • Know Your Budget: Are you paying? Are your parents? What can you afford? Narrow it down to a few stores and a few dress options that you can afford. Prom dresses can get very pricey if you don’t do your research ahead of time.
  • Know Your Style: Knowing what style you like and looks best on you is very important when you’re dress shopping. It helps you narrow your choices and lessens your store and ‘try-on’ time. You also have to be aware of what style you are searching for so you wear the correct bra and underwear. Some dresses require halter or strapless bras while others require thongs or full coverage underwear. Everyone has tried on a strapless shirt with a regular bra, buy it, and realize it’s not quite right with a strapless. This happens with dresses all the time as well. So know, before you go!
  • Eat Before You Go: Just because you are trying to shed those extra pounds for the big night, doesn’t mean you need to starve yourself when looking for the perfect dress. If you buy a dress with a little room, you can always get it taken in closer to prom night. Also, long lines and trying on dress after dress can make you cranky even if you aren’t hungry. So we can only imagine if you are! Eat a meal, take a snack. Odds are you are going to be on the hunt for a while.
  • Parent Friendly: Last thing you want is to battle your parents over your dream dress, especially if they are paying. Talk to your parents about the new dresses that are in style before you go. Show them pictures of what you are looking for. We know your parents aren’t going to be at prom but they and your friends and dates’ parents will be very involved in the pre-prom festivities; taking pictures, holding the party, or possibly driving you. Loving a style is important but respecting your elder’s opinions is too. Compromise is the best way to attack this issue.

You’ve got enough stressors in your life with homework and finals, don’t let shopping for Prom dresses be one of them too.

To DIY or Not to DIY: Make-Up

April 2nd, 2013

prom hair stylesSo you’ve got your dress and your date. You’ve decided on your hairstyle and your ride; but what about your make-up? We’ve compiled our best make-up tips for when you’re deciding how to put your face on for prom night.

  • Pick either your eyes or mouth to accentuate.
    • If you choose your eyes… go all out with eye liner, eye shadow and mascara. Pair them with a subtle light lip.
    • If you choose your lips… use a red or vibrant pink to draw them out, but make sure to go lighter on the eyes.
  • Perfect your skin tone.
    • Know your skin type. Skin comes in many different ways – normal, oily, dry, a combination and sensitive. Products are even made specifically for your skin type, so knowing what kind of skin you have can help you buy the makeup that will always have you looking your best.
    • Choose a foundation that perfectly matches your skin and blends in well with the jaw line. Remember to add some color! Blush can help you create the perfect cheekbones and help boost your healthy glow.
  • Pictures of Celebs or Makeup styles you like.
    • It never hurts to have a photo of someone’s make-up that you love. It’s easier to recreate when you see your end result. It is also easier for a makeup artist to replicate if you decide to go to a professional.

 Specific tips for eyes…

  • Blending is Key. Make sure to use different colors and always blend darker colors on the outside edges of your eye. If you have close-set eyes, using a white color on the inside corner of the eye, near the tear duct can open them up and make them seem not only bigger but wider apart.
  • Choose shadow colors that make your eyes pop! Use your eye color to choose a great shadow shade. Brown eyes look great with green or pink eye shadow while blue eyes look better with earth tones with a slight purple base or slate grey. Hazel and green eyes look best with purple eye shadow because it provides a dramatic contrast. If you don’t want to go super dramatic use a warm mocha color.
  • Open Up Your Eyes.  Keep your eyebrows manicured and curl your lashes. Also using eye liner on the top and bottom lids tends to close the eye, so focus on just the top lid instead.

When all is said and done and your makeup is done to perfection, there is one last thing to remember- Bring back-ups! Pack your purse with the essentials: Lipstick/gloss, blotting papers, concealer, powder, breath mints and a small bottle of hairspray are all necessary items for touch ups in the bathroom. With your war paint on and your arsenal packed, you’ll be ready to have a blast at prom!

Safe Sober Prom 2013

Safe Sober Prom Night

Prom night is right around the corner and most high school students are making preparations like asking out the perfect date, picking out dresses, and making post prom plans. But they may not be aware of the dangers their night may hold. Prom night is considered the deadliest night for teenagers because of the prevalence of drinking and driving.

According to Students Against Destructive Driving (SADD), nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed multiple alcoholic drinks by the end of high school. They also report 70% of high school juniors and seniors expect their peers to drink and drive on prom night.

As an attorney, David Daggett, of Daggett Shuler Attorneys at Law, has encountered the life-shattering effects of underage alcohol use. Wanting to devise a way to reduce the number of alcohol-related teen tragedies he started the Safe Sober Prom Night program.  By presenting the students with a pledge to stay safe and sober on prom night, he hopes to make an impact by encouraging teens to stay safe and drug and alcohol free during Prom  Since its inception more than 400,000 students have signed the Safe Sober pledge.

To be apart of the movement, take the pledge at www.safesober.com.

Meet Your Match

February 27th, 2013

Night Moves 6600To match or not to match, that shouldn’t be your first question; but it is important in the planning of your prom night. From his tie to your corsage, there are a lot of elements that go into dressing for one of the biggest nights of your high school life. We have outlined some of the most important points to consider when meeting your match at prom this year:

Consider Him: Once the man of your dreams asks you to prom, don’t start firing away questions about what you are going to wear. You have to be conscious of his needs and wants, too. After all, it’s a big night for both of you. So don’t cut your guy out of making any decisions for prom, especially the decision of what HE is going to wear. Bring up the idea of matching after you’ve both tried on certain styles and colors of dresses or tuxedos and picked out a few favorites.

How Much Match: So you decided you want to match, but how and how much? Decide whether you want to completely or partially match. Matching partially can be achieved by having him utilize same color accent accessories that match your dress. Pocket squares, tie clips, ties, cummerbunds, corsages, and vests are all ways to incorporate your dress color into his tux. Purses, scarves, and clutches should all be the same color pallet as your guy’s tuxedo. If he is wearing black with an accent color of pink to match your pink dress, then your clutch, scarf or purse should be black. A great idea for guys is to bring a picture or the actual dress to the tuxedo shop to make sure you will match perfectly.

Color Coordinating: Contrary to most beliefs, your guy doesn’t have to wear the same exact color as you to match. Other great color combinations are pink and silver, purple and teal, navy and gold, blue and lime green, or salmon and light grey. When in doubt, fellas, choose a black or white tux. Black and white will match virtually every color dress she can come up with.

Matching can be fun for you and your date, but make sure the colors and patterns are something you both like and want to wear. If you follow our rules for matching, you and your date will look absolutely stunning when you walk into prom this year.

Prom Asking Ideas for Boys

February 5th, 2013

Are you nervous about asking your dream girl to Prom? Can’t think of special ideas on how to ask your potential date? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. From low key to extravagant to down-right embarrassing, here are some of our favorite ways to ask someone to prom:

Low Key: Nothing says simple romance like a single flower and a poem. Some girls don’t need the flair and over-the-top theatrics to woo them. If you are sweet and sincere, how can they resist?

The Delivery:  Buy a blank jigsaw puzzle from any arts and crafts store. Put it together and write your name on the blank side of the puzzle. Break it apart and throw it in a bag with a list of instructions saying, “Dear her name, Put this puzzle together to find out who really wants to go to prom with you!” Leave it on her doorstep or have it delivered to her house. Once she gets the puzzle and puts it together, the question will be answered and you will have your date to prom!

The Break In: Get one of her friends to steal her keys for you. When she is busy – either in school or at practice after school – put flowers and a note in her car asking her to go to prom with you. She’ll be so surprised and impressed by how much effort you put into asking that she’ll definitely say yes.

The Interruption: This is a good way to one part embarrass, two parts flatter your potential date. Get a hold of her class schedule and make a point to stop in and stand in front of the entire class and ask her to prom. Interrupting class is usually frowned upon, but if you go out of your way to risk getting sent to the principal’s office just to ask your crush to prom, even your teacher will be swooning. Bonus points for singing.

The Attention Grabber: Poster Board? $10.Stakes and Glue?$5.Markers?$5.Everyone in school talking about how romantic you are and how lucky your crush is that you asked her to prom?Priceless. Take 6 or 7 pieces of poster board and write “Dear her name, Will You Go To Prom With Me? Love, your name” spread across the poster boards. Glue them to stakes and take them to school. Stick the poster board stakes along the curb driving into school. Everyone will see it as they arrive to school that morning and you’ll have your “Yes!” by homeroom.

The Instagram Ask Out: Is the object of your desires a Social Media Junkie? Instagram a photomap of you with signs in different locations saying will you go to prom with me and tag her @username. Your likes will skyrocket and she’ll think you’re even sexier now that you have the same interests.

The Participator: Run to the store and buy a white t-shirt and a permanent marker. On the t-shirt draw two big boxes with yes and no underneath them. Then above the boxes write “Her name, Will you go to prom with me?” Make sure when you decide to wear your shirt that you bring the marker so when you walk up to her she can check off her answer. Also, for a twist on this move and a dash of attention grabber, lose the shirt and draw it directly on your stomach. Just be careful if you’re doing this at school!

Asking your crush to prom can be stressful.Use one of these ideas or get inspired for a creative move of your own and help kick off your prom season the help make it more fun than nerve-wracking. Good luck Romeos! Your Juliets are waiting!

Formal vs. Informal for Prom

December 21st, 2012

When prom season rolls around, it’s very easy to get excited and stressed. There is a lot of planning that needs to be done, such as finding a date, doing your hair and makeup, but most importantly picking out your dress

A formal event usually calls for long dresses for women, and suits or tuxedos for men. How can you determine what is formal and informal to wear to prom? Read the following distinctions:

  • Choose a floor length evening dress. Nothing says formal like an elegant gown that touches the floor. Cocktail dresses are informal for prom and more appropriately suited for events that occur before 6 pm. After 6 pm, invitations usually call for a black tie in which you should expect a more formal event.
  • Opt for a bold color. A semi-formal event can mean a long or short cocktail dress is appropriate, as well as more pastel colors. Lighter colors and fabrics are more often worn at a daytime semi-formal event, whereas in the evening, blacks and darker colors are seen more often, as well as unique fabrics and patterns.
  • Get fancy. You only have so many opportunities at a young age to get dressed up. There are so many great prom dress styles full of sequins and rhinestones, a-line, empire waist dresses, and ball gowns. Prom is a special occasion that only comes once a year, so why not get as fancy as can be for this special night?

Finding the prom dress you love is the best part of the event. Look and feel your best at prom this season and all of the other planning will fall into place. Visit our formal prom dress page for some of this year’s best styles.

With Prom rapidly approaching, you want to make sure your dress will fit after the final alteration. Here are some quick, healthy snacks to try in order to make sure your dress will look perfect.

  • Whole grain bread and almond butter. You will stay fuller longer by choosing almond butter because of its proteins and healthy fats. The whole grain bread will give you a boost of energy.
  • Yogurt. Yogurt is loaded with calcium which is perfect for growing teenage girls. Get a low-fat kind and add fruit, granola, or nuts for a little something extra.
  • Hummus and vegetables. Eating hummus is extremely healthy. It is made from chickpeas which are a great source of calcium and protein. Pair it with veggies to make this snack even healthier.
  • Trail Mix. Make some trail mix yourself! Take ¼ cups of dried fruit and nuts and ½ cup of whole grain cereal. It is healthier than store bought bags that contain lots of sugar and salt.
  • Cereal. Choose cereal with made of whole grain and fiber. Splash some skim or one percent milk on it and enjoy!
